History of Fort Worth, Texas
Fort Worth, the seat of Tarrant County Texas, lies at the confluence of the Clear and West forks of the Trinity River. It was established in 1849 by General William Worth as a military outpost to protect Native Americans against Comanche raids.
After the army left in 1853, settlers around the fort moved into its buildings, expanding it to the neighboring city of Birdville that then acted as the county seat. Fort Worth became a stopover point for the longhorn cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail.
With the construction of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1876, Fort Worth, Texas became a cattle-shipping boomtown commonly known as Cowtown.
