San Antonio was the first civilian settlement in Texas, founded in 1718. San Antonio is a part of Bexar County, Texas, which was named after San Antonio de Béxar, one of the Mexican municipalities of Texas at the time of its independence. San Antonio gained visibility with the Alamo as a major transportation station between east Texas and Mexico. In 1836, 200 Texas defenders fought for the Alamo against troops from Mexico. Later, San Antonio gained popularity with the construction of the first railroad in 1877.
