6 Ways to Keep Kiddos Safe This Halloween

November 29, 2016 By Travis Patterson

It’s a scary fact – On average, kids are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Review these tips to make Halloween a fun and safe holiday for your little ones.

CONSIDER SUPER FUN ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL DOORBELL RINGING

Take the kiddos to a neighborhood or school-sponsored carnival in lieu of door-to-door trick-or-treating. They’ll typically close off the streets, so MUCH safer and usually more fun, too!

SEE AND BE SEEN

Smack some reflector tape on your mini super-heroes. Flashlights are always a must. And glow sticks make fun, safe additions to any costume!

TRAVEL IN GROUPS

There is strength – and safety – in numbers!

SET UP YOUR MEDICAL ID

Take 5 minutes to set up or update the Medical ID app on your iPhone. If something awful were to happen to you or your kid, this is often the first place EMS will look for identification and basic health information. Be sure to note any allergies and/ or medical conditions here. Quick access to this information could save a life!

MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS

Take your insta-worthy pumpkin pics BEFORE you hit the streets. Be alert and on the lookout for distracted and/or over-served drivers.

DON’T COUNT ON DRIVERS TO STOP

Pedestrians have the right-of-way in Texas, but that certainly doesn’t mean walkers should count on a driver to stop. Make eye contact with the driver before you step into the street, and be 100% sure they see you.

Most importantly, remember that kids will be kids. Which means that drivers should be extra cautious on Halloween night. Please pump the brakes, and PLEASE PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN. You never know when a candy-crazed superhero might dart into the street.

Of course, if you’re ever in need of legal representation, we hope you’ll contact the attorneys at Patterson Law Group. Because we care about our community and the families that comprise it.
